Responsibilities
Lead optical system simulation and analysis for laser communication terminals from concept to detailed design using ZEMAX OpticStudio. Model and verify optical performance including beam propagation, polarization behavior, optical losses, and tolerance budgets. Plan and conduct optical verification tests in the lab and correlate results with simulations. Define technical requirements for optical systems, support procurement by reviewing optical drawings, and aid in qualification of components in clean room and lab settings. Collaborate with opto-mechanical, thermal, electronics, and control teams to optimize design for performance, size, cost, and manufacturability. Optionally optimize systems for stray and false light using tools like FRED or ASAP.
Qualifications
Minimum 6 years of hands-on experience in optical design, simulation, and lab verification, preferably in space or airborne systems. University degree in Physics, Optics/Photonics, or related discipline. Proficiency with ZEMAX OpticStudio is required; experience with COMSOL Multiphysics or STOP analysis is advantageous. Hands-on lab experience aligning infrared optical systems and operating optical measurement equipment. Practical knowledge of fiber optics, laser beam propagation, and polarization optics. Strong documentation skills and teamwork mindset.
